Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega has published a series of photographs dating back to 1980 as part of the commemoration of the 51st Anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. The photos are remarkable in that they show for the first time pictures of a woman who has lived in obscurity even as she was married to one of the world’s most visible leaders, Fidel Castro.
The pictures, 35 in all, were posted on Nicaragua’s El 19, the official organ of the Sandinista party. Naturally, they are causing a stir in Latin America. The pictures show the Castros at home in what appears to be a very modest dwelling. Her name is Delia Soto del Valle. She is believed to given Fidel five sons. She has rarely made any public appearances. The last known appearance was when Elián González was returned to Cuba to be reunited with his father a decade ago. The photos provide remarkable insight into the home life of the Castros. She’s the blonde on the far right. The other woman is Rosario Murillo, the wife of Daniel Ortega.
