Elaine Bernard talks about the difficulties faced by unions in organizing.
Carol Giacomo, a member of the editorial board of The New York Times, and Walter Russell Mead, a senior fellow for U.S. foreign policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, join Daljit Dhaliwal to discuss the major events of the week.
They discuss the continuing threat of piracy from Somalia’s failed state, the terror threat in Britain and Europe and the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea.
This is video from a 9.12 Project Tea Party held recently in Copley, Ohio, a town in the Akron area. The first speaker talks about the Constitution Party, the second one talks about the Libertarian Party. The third main speaker is an older man. In his view, Obama is a fifty year communist conspiracy in the making. It’s hard to keep up with the number of conspiracy theories to which he subscribes but it seems this is all George Soros doing. Communists are everywhere apparently. Near the end of his bewildering rant, he tells those in attendance to pull their kids out of college because the kids are being “brainwashed.” Then it gets really interesting.
Woman: [Shouts] “Burn the books!” [applause]
Man: “I don’t think you were serious about that, were you?”
Woman: “I am too.”
Man: “Burn all the books?!”
Woman: “The ones in college, those, those brainwashing books.”
Man: “[laughs] Brainwashing books?”
Woman: “Yes.”
Man: “Which ones are those?”
Woman: “Like, the evolution crap, and, yeah…”
In mid-March, I starting looking at Glenn Beck’s 9 12 Project. It then had 344,000 members. Today less than a month later, it has 541,000. In a nation of 300 million, that’s a drop in the bucket but it is still half a million people subscribing to the rants of a lunatic who thinks the country is headed towards dictatorship.
The threat of more Taliban attacks is forcing a new security clampdown in Islamabad where concrete barricades and security checkpoints have been set up across the capital.
The security alert follows a warning from Baitullah Meshud, Pakistan’s Taliban leader, to strike Islamabad unless the US stops launching deadly missile attacks against his fighters. Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder has more.
