Al Jazeera’s Yvonne Ndege, reports from Bida, Nigeria where a polygamy case has caused huge controversy. Mohammed Bello Abubakar, 84, has 86 wives and over 170 children. He has been arrested by an Islamic Sharia court for refusing to divorce all but four of them. charged with “insulting religious creed” and “unlawful marriages”. A Sharia court judge denied him bail until another hearing on October 6. Two weeks ago, he won a court injunction preventing authorities from banishing him if he refused to divorce 82 of his wives. Islam suggests that four wives is the right number.
