How would Obama handle himself in this situation? The loveable but bumbling Jim Hacker is a master of political expediency. Sound familiar?
- Why didn’t I think of this before?
- Because we only just met!
Also, the panic that seizes Jim Hacker when his secretary remarks that it is a “courageous” decision! Brilliant! Thanks for the clip. (And i never had thought of Obama as “lovable but bumbling”—i’ll give it a try!)
It’s a great clip from a great show. To be fair (to Jim Hacker that is), Jim Hacker has attributes that Obama doesn’t. For starters more experience having first served in the Cabinet as Minister for Administrative Affairs. And Hacker is a policy wonk even if his ideas are all-too-often set afoul by Sir Humphrey. I particulary enjoyed the little speech at the end-It’s one man to lead his people out of darkness . . .
As for Obama being lovable, many do. I don’t and doubt I will any time soon. Watching this over again, I pondered Clinton’s decision to join the Armed Services Committee when she came to the Senate. It was brilliant move on her part and another reason why the CiC role will fit her well. The nuances of military affairs are complex and I believe that for Obama it will prove a steep learning curve.
